Astronomy Catalogs Useful for Astrophotography

Description

Diagram showing the main catalogs used in astrophotography of nebulae, galaxies, asterisms and globular clusters.  Shows catalog names, sizes and relationships in some cases, including overlap.  The Messier, Caldwell and NGC catalogs overlap with many others, which is not indicated on the diagram.

Diagram created with Excalidraw.

TODO:
- indicate Northern vs Southern celestial hemisphere coverage of catalogs
- add star cluster catalogs such as Collinder, Melotte and Stock

B

Description: Added a couple more catalogs (Hickson's Compact Groups of galaxies and Cederblad's bright nebula) and more indications of overlapping relationships (e.g., all of the Messier objects seem to have aliases in the NGC).

Description: minor change to overlap Caldwell w/NGC and increase title size

D

Description: Caldwell, IC, NGC, Messier, Arp and Hickson catalogs interrelated and overlapped better. I have counts of the overlaps and am deciding where to indicate, for example, that Caldwell consists of 99 NGC objects, 5 IC, 2 Collander, 1 Sharpless-2 and 1 Melotte -- perhaps separate pie charts.

TODO: add catalogs Collander and Melotte, Zwicky (CGCG) and VV (Vorontsov-Velyaminov), Herschel
TODO: add catalog publication / completion dates or separate timeline.
